Bringing Children to School

EGG truly believes that all children need to be in schools, and not doing household chores or doing any other work!

Illiteracy and dropping out of school at various grade levels is a problem faced by poor communities and due to various socio-economic reasons. Girls are at the receiving end more as compared to boys. So the very first step in improving the status of education in any community is to bring children to school. EGG has been undertaking this activity very aggressively by identifying dropouts and illiterates through door-to-door surveys, counseling parents and guardians to encourage them to send their children to school, and facilitating enrolment of children into government schools. This process is incomplete unless close monitoring is done to ensure that children continue going to school. Retention is another aspect of the work that EGG has been engaged in over the years.

What we do

Building Girls’ Leadership

Girls can do wonders if given the right opportunities and a safe space to speak up and act!

Girls’ Parliaments (GP) empower girls to improve their education and status in their own communities. GP leaders are elected through a democratic election process. Upon formation of each GP, EGG provides its members with leadership training. A strategic action plan is developed by the GPs. Final phase incorporates implementation of the strategies identified to create change. Not only do GPs work to improve school education and empower students, specifically girls, they also work to build or enhance girls and women’s skills leading to their financial empowerment. Together we are constantly looking for opportunities to provide employable and marketable skills to girls and women so they can earn their livelihood and support themselves and their families.

What we do

Creating Community Ownership

When communities take ownership of their schools, everyone benefits!

We motivate and educate the community as a whole to understand the benefits of girls’ education. Gaining support and trust of the community goes a long way in making a meaningful impact for girls’ education. We convene meetings in villages which invite parents, non-parents, and dropouts to meet and learn about the importance of education. We also encourage the community to participate in School Management Committees set up in schools. Another essential element of the Path breaking Model includes efforts to leverage the existing resources available. To this end, EGG strengthens teachers’ motivation and performance, and works closely with the government to transition responsibility for EGG’s program. Realizing that the long-term success and proliferation of our model requires that we build sustainability within our archetype, we have developed a process through which we transition responsibility for the model from our control and financial support to that of the local government.
