Canada’s commitment to educating girls worldwide.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently announced his intentions to double aid to the Global Partnership for Education to an additional $180 million over a span of three years. The nation has contributed $120 million dollars between 2015 and 2018 and this money comes as an additional expenditure specially dedicated to educating young girl across the world.

The announcement was made at a panel discussion on the education and empowerment of women and girls at the World Economic Forum held in Switzerland last week. He was joined on the panel by longtime women’s rights activist Malala Yousafzai.

Trudeau stressed the importance of female inclusively in corporations and businesses, adding that “conversations change” when women become a part of them.

He also declared the creation of a G7 Gender Equality Advisory Council that would be co-chaired by Melinda Gates and Isabelle Hudon who serves as the Canadian ambassador to France.

Their jobs will entail making sure that “everything the G7 does – all the meetings, all the commitments, all the initiatives that we partner in this year and hopefully into the future, have a gender lens”, said Trudeau.

Canada is currently the 10th largest donor to the Global Partnership for Education and their commitment to educating girls worldwide has been lauded by multiple NGOs.
